PHYSICIANS' HOME

...a charitable organization, incorporated 1919, assisting physicians in need

History & Outline

In 1918, around Thanksgiving time, several physicians in New York City joined together to help a colleague who was living in the poorhouse. From this effort grew a new organization, called
Physicians' Home.

Throughout the earliest years, Physicians' Home was actually a physical structure - one of which, donated by Stephen V. Mountain MD, was a large country home in Allegany county, New York. In time, it was decided that needy physicians were best served by providing financial assistance while they lived in their own home. This is the way Physicians' Home has worked over the last half-century.

Applicants seeking help should have obtained a NY State medical license and practiced in the State. Residents in training and immediate family members of a physician may also be eligible.
The circumstances of current beneficiaries are updated at intervals, to determine a need for continued assistance.
In a typical year, over fifty individuals will receive regular financial help.

Physicians' Home welcomes Funds from all sources interested in our objective. The organization is funded primarily by donations from New York State Physicians. During a given year there are often several Estate Bequests. The state medical society Alliance/Auxiliary groups have been strong contributors. Donations are also received from Foundations that support our goal.

The organizational structure consists of a Board of Directors, Trustees, five Officers and an Executive Committee. A part-time office staff maintains day-to-day operations at the administrative office, located in New York City.

The financial records of the organization are audited annually, and a report sent at the end of each year to the New York State Charities Bureau. Physicians' Home is a non-profit corporation, tax exempt pursuant to section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Physicians' Home, as a separate corporate entity, works in connection with the Medical Society of the  State of New York. Each year a report is presented to the MSSNY House of Delegates meeting.
